Client:
U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
Project Name:
UPS and Critical Power Systems at Austin Texas Veterans Health Care System
Austin, TX
Start/Scheduled Date of Completion Date:
January 2013 - March 2013
Project Scope:

A temporary critical power distribution system to two data center power panels was provided for the Austin Information Technology Center (AITC). The N₊1, Exterior_Austin_Texas100% redundant power consisted of two 1,000 KVA emergency generators and two 500 KVA replacement UPS systems. Temporary generators were used to maintain technology center operations, which serve Veterans Administration and other government operations nationwide, 24/7/365.

The temporary UPS container, constructed from two 8’ X 40’ shipping containers has a fire protection system consisted of two Novec 1230 tanks, suppression piping and heads, and a control valve on each tank. The HVAC system consists of two Carrier 25-ton rooftop units (RTUs) mounted on grade. The generators for the project are trailer-mounted 1000 KVA, 480/277v, three-phase, and four-wire diesel fired.

The UPS system is a Powerware 9315 refurbished unit with new batteries. The capacity is 500 KVA (2x500KVA N₊1), 480/277 volt, three-phase, and four-wire. The paralleling system provides redundant power. The system bypass module (SBM) housed an internal static switch. The unit was installed in the UPS container with all interconnections to the GE switchgear.

Working within and among the buildings on the Austin VA complex required attention, not only to the AITC, but also to the various other end-users housed within the building and adjacent buildings. Timing of deliveries and on-site storage of materials was closely coordinated with ISS and the Contracting Officer’s Representative.
