Project Name:
Elmhurst Quarry Switchgear & MCC
Elmhurst, DuPage County, IL
Start/Scheduled Date of Completion Date:
August 2015 - in progress
Project Scope:

Elmhurst_QuarryThis project installed a new 600-volt, three-phase, four-wire, 60Hz switchgear/motor control center near the service entrance of the quarry, serving the East lobe pumps. The system is rated for a continuous current of 1600A with an interrupting rating of 65,000 amperes RMS at 480VAC.

The Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) include an Automatic Energy Optimization (AEO), an Automatic Motor Adaptation (AMA) feature, and a programmable motor parameter, all to minimize energy consumption. To increase the drives’ life cycles, the VFDs have temperature-controlled cooling fans, metal enclosures, and several features designed to monitor, remotely operate, minimize harmonic distortion, and reduce power fluctuations.

Two new electric submersible stormwater pumps were also replaced in the East lobe. The existing equipment was relocated to the West lobe. Float Leakage Sensors (FLS) and MAS (Monitoring and Status) units were installed for both the new and relocated equipment.

After performing the field adjustments to get the system and all associated equipment operating within all of the defined parameters, testing and start-up were conducted by the factory-trained field supervisory personnel provided by the manufacturers. Underwater divers guided the pumps onto the discharge elbows on the East Lobe of the quarry, The installation and testing were video-recorded to verify proper seating of the pumps.
