Project Name:
Air Conditioning Upgrades
Chicago, IL
Start/Scheduled Date of Completion Date:
September 2014 - November 2014
Project Scope:

Within a six-week schedule during the start of the school year, 10 schools received new remote-control enabled window-mounted room air conditioners.

The building was in session during construction, so precautions were taken to limit any noise, dust, odors, and vibration. Work was scheduled and partitioned off to limit the impact on the learning environment. All work was conducted after 4:00 p.m. Monday-Friday. Protection from adverse weather conditions was provided during installation of the units.

Sizes of the units varied between 1-2.5 tons. Transformer and main service upgrades were required at some school locations, which required coordination with ComEd to access the electrical panels.

The installed electric supply was rated and insulated for 600V. Copper conductors were installed in raceways, along with all cables and connectors, with minimal splices. Selective demolition included wall and floor penetrations, which were patched and repaired as part of the scope of work. All applicable grounding, bonding, labeling, and fire suppression requirements were also installed.

Concrete pads were provided for switchboards and transformers on the floor. The Energy Star-rated units have digital display and digital electronic controls including programmable energy saver function with 24-hour on/off timer, dehumidification and auto modes, and auto restart after power outage. Start-up and testing was conducted in the presence of the owner's and the manufacturer's technical representatives.
